Gift Back began as a festive tradition. Each November and December, a network of workplace “elves” encourages colleagues to buy an extra gift, before volunteers sort, wrap and deliver them, often by cargo bike, to charities across the community in time for Christmas.

“As usual it leaves me feeling humbled when I see the depth of generosity and care people place for others within our BID,” said Winnie Baffoe, Director of Engagement and Influence at South London Mission, one of the charities supported last year. “Thank you and to all who make this happen. There is certainly more good than bad on our planet.”

For 2026, Gift Back is growing beyond the festive collection to include large scale surplus donations and workplace giving drives. Alongside the traditional employee gift drive, businesses will be able to donate surplus stock, including end of line products and previous season inventory, sponsor a category of essential items, or organise a workplace collection.

Science Gallery Museum offered an early example of what’s possible. Last year, the venue donated its surplus stock through Gift Back, and working with Team London Bridge, that single donation was redistributed across 22 different local charities. It’s a clear example of what’s possible when a business looks at surplus differently: not as waste, but as an opportunity for impact.

For local residents, workers and businesses wanting to take part, there are plenty of ways to get involved. Individuals can rally their workplace to collect gifts during the festive campaign, or volunteer their time sorting and wrapping. Businesses looking to go further can donate surplus stock, sponsor a category of essential items, or become an official Gift Back Partner.

Nigel Pearce, a local Police Sergeant, saw the impact firsthand last year. “This festive period has continued to show me just how special the people and communities around me truly are,” he said. “Through the kindness and generosity of Team London Bridge, we were able to donate hundreds of Christmas presents to those who may not otherwise have received a gift this year. Seeing the impact of that generosity, the gratitude, the smiles, and the genuine thanks, is something I won’t forget.”
