Tuesday 3rd March, 12:30-13:30, Thomas Guy Statue, SE1 9RS
Beginning at London Bridge Station, we explore the pioneering women who broke barriers in transport, becoming the first female train and Underground drivers. From there, the walk moves to Guy’s Hospital and the Old Operating Theatre, where the story of women in medicine comes to life through figures such as Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole and Britain’s first female doctor, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson.
Continuing along the river, we turn our attention to HMS Belfast, reflecting on the vital roles women played during the First and Second World Wars, both on the home front and beyond. The walk concludes with views across the Thames to Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, where we consider the fight for women’s suffrage and the early women who worked at Tower Bridge, helping to redefine what was possible in the workplace.
This walk is a celebration of courage, progress and the women whose stories are woven into the streets of Southwark.
