Boat, a three-metre bronze sculpture standing at the entrance to the Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital, was created in response to the Roman boat (AD 190–225) discovered nearly five metres beneath the site in 1958.

The journey of that ancient vessel through the archipelagos of medieval Southwark inspired artist Daniel to reflect on the connections between past and present—linking Londoners’ movements across the city, patients’ journeys through treatment, and the broader voyages we all undertake in life. Positioned beside the road, the sculpture appears docked mid-way on its passage, offering both a focal point and a symbolic welcome to the Centre.

The work was commissioned by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, funded by Guy’s & St Thomas’ Charity, and curated by Futurecity.
