Development Overview

Coming into the business district, you can't fail to notice hoardings and construction work.

The London Bridge business district is undergoing another wave of regeneration - with some of London's most prestigious developments being built here. Our Construction Support Group has been established to help manage the impact of these exciting projects. To read about the Group click here.

The map below shows some of the key construction sites in and around the Business Improvement District (BID) area (both planned or underway).

____ Team London Bridge boundary

Site 1 - The Place (Sellar Property Group)

Planning permission was given in 2006 for a 600,000 sq ft (55,740 sq m) office and retail building that, along with The Shard, forms the cornerstone of the London Bridge Quarter. Initially nicknamed "The Gem", The Place will provide high quality office space, with typical floors of over 30,000 sq ft (2,787 sq m) each. Access to the offices will be through an entrance lobby located on a new piazza between the building and the station entrance. News Corp businesses will occupy the building from 2014 onwards.

Site 2 - The Shard (Sellar Property Group)

Demolition of Southwark Towers and an adjoining section of London Bridge station was completed in 2008. Construction was completed prior to the 2012 Olympics and opened to the public in Feb 2013. The 72-storey Shard has already put the London Bridge business district on the international map, being the tallest building in Europe at over 300 metres tall.

Site 4 - One Tower Bridge Road (Berkeley Homes/Southwark Council)

A mixed-use development comprising 9 blocks of a total of 396 residential units, commercial, cultural spaces and a single storey basement area. Architecturally designed by Squires and Partners, work is now well underway with construction due to be complete 2014. The adjacent St Olaves college building has been purchased by the Lalit hotel group and will reopen as a luxury hotel in 2015.

Site 5 - London Bridge Station and Thameslink (Network Rail)

Several initiatives will make life easier for passengers. The Thameslink Programme will deliver more trains, new direct journey opportunities and longer trains across the Thameslink route. This will alllow more people to access London Bridge and help the area's growth. Network Rail will improve the old Victorian track layout around the station.

A new two track viaduct will be constructed over Borough Market, easing congestion and enabling more trains to travel north-south through London during peak times and the entire Station will be redeveloped to create a state of the art gateway to London Bridge.

Site 6 - The Quill (Investream)

On the corner of Weston Street and St Thomas Street, and roughly one third the height of the Shard, The Quill (a reference to the areas literary heritage) was granted planning consent in late 2010. Consisting of two seperate elements of 21 and 31 storeys, The Quill will be home to roughly 450 students from Kings College London's Guy's Campus.

Site 7 - Vinegar Yard
A four storey former vinegar warehouse and surrounding grounds - currently being used for storage and car parking. A planning application has not yet been submitted.
